Knack Publishing on AI
Generally
Never have the arts been more under threat. Reams and reams of the unreal litter feeds, stifle with frustration our creative thought and, perhaps most concerning, our trust of one another; the last 4 years have been an assault on the senses. AI, whilst having clear benefits in the fields of health, agriculture and technology, has no place in the creative arts. It is an affront to the expressed pain, suffering and joy in the lived experiences that fuel creativity.
What is creativity?
If an alien race appeared on the horizon tomorrow, we would all feel better if they expressed themselves, as we do, through the arts. It is a sign that feeling is possible, that those very expressions come from lived experiences. Without those fundamental experiences, what are we? If you are a terrible illustrator, but create a piece of art based upon some feeling you had, this is as genuinely art as any Da Vinci.
Why creating with artificial intelligence IS NOT creativity
It is a disgrace that bypassing years of practice, love, frustration, sadness and loss, by commanding a robot, whose own knowledge is the accumulated experience of those who did it the right way, should be commonplace.
How are businesses / people combating this?
AI detectors. This appears to be a good solution for detecting AI generated materials, right? I mean, that's what they were designed for after all!
NOPE.
We had considered opening our IP to submissions for existing stories that fit the constraints of our lore, but after a month we gave up after a flurry of complaints about how content was rejected by us because of suspected AI assistance. In many cases, having been offered evidence to the contrary, including material printed inside collections that existed long before AI was available to the wider public, we were forced to backtrack and apologise. We then ran 3 of our own stories through several different detectors with wildly varying results.
Publishers, lecturers, school teachers be warned; AI detectors don't work, they are simply a new and ridiculous puzzle to solve and wouldn't be necessary if we just prevented AI from generating art at all.
How should we be combating this?
AI generated art, in all forms, should be banned from all corners of the creative web, social media feeds and the very generation of such materials made impossible. Use it for research, agricultural solutions, for improving health and for simply answering questions. Not for the theft of IP to generate duplicates of lived experiences.
SAY NO TO AI GENERATED ART.
